The Military Says: Bush's "Surge" is Not Working. And By the Way, the Insurgency? Never Had To Happen.

Shockingly!, this story was not found in any American publication, since according to the corporate media, Iraq is Not an Issue. And it's all because of The Commander Guy's Awesomest Surge Evah!!!

"Don't let the quiet fool you," a senior defense official says. "There's still a huge chasm between how the White House views Iraq and how we [in the Pentagon] view Iraq. The White House would like to have you believe the 'surge' has worked, that we somehow defeated the insurgency. That's just ludicrous. There's increasing quiet in Iraq, but that's happened because of our shift in strategy - the 'surge' had nothing to do with it."
Can you imagine that? But wait - it gets worse. It turns out that the State Department and the White House could have stopped the insurgency in its tracks in 2003, and they did not.

In part, the roots of the disagreement between the Pentagon and White House over what is really happening in Iraq is historical. Senior military officers contend that the seeming fall-off in in-country violence not only has nothing to do with the increase in US force levels, but that the dampening of the insurgency that took hold last summer could have and would have taken place much earlier, within months of America's April 2003 occupation of Baghdad.

Moreover, these officers contend, the insurgency might not have put down roots in the country after the fall of Baghdad if it had not been for the White House and State Department - which undermined military efforts to strike deals with a number of Iraq's most disaffected tribal leaders. These officers point out that the first contact between high-level Pentagon officials and the nascent insurgency took place in Amman, Jordan, in August of 2003 - but senior Bush administration officials killed the talks.
Why in the world would the Bush administration officials kill peace talks between tribal leaders and the Pentagon? Well, because the insurgents were being encouraged by the Evil Whose Name Must Not Be Spoken: Wahhabis from Saudi Arabia. Now, let's see. Who ELSE is a Wahhabi from Saudi Arabia? (Hint: Attacked us on September The Eleventh, Two Thousand and One.)

At the center of these early talks was a group of Iraqis led by Sheikh Talal al-Gaood, a Sunni businessman with close ties to Anbar's tribal leaders. Gaood, who died of a heart ailment in March of 2006, was a passionate Iraqi patriot who feared growing al-Qaeda influence in his country. Speaking over coffee from his office in Amman in 2005, Gaood was enraged by the "endless mistakes" of the US leadership. "You [Americans] face a Wahhabi threat that you cannot even begin to fathom," he said at the time, and he derided White House "propaganda" about the role of Syria in fueling the insurgency.

Gaood, looking every bit the former Ba'athist - complete with suspenders and Saddam Hussein-like mustache was particularly critical of what he called "the so-called counter-insurgency experts among Washington policymakers who think they know Iraq but don't." As he argued: "The guys who come through here, very educated, come in their brown robes and say they are going to Iraq to kill the Americans. They are not Syrians. They are Wahhabis. They are from Saudi Arabia. But if you talk to American officials, it is like they don't exist."
Let me be very clear that I never supported this invasion, and took to the streets in protest in 2003. I thought it was illegal and unconstitutional, not to mention morally insupportable. But at least if we were going to do something so wrong and brutal, we could have done it with the least amount of damage to Iraq, the Iraqi people, and our military. Instead, like the King Midas of crap, Teh Deciderer's touch turned the invasion into an occupation that has set the Middle East aflame and has turned our country into a nation of murdering, torturing cowards.

Heckuva job, Bushie.

No One Escapes...The Mustache of Justice!

Not even Condi Rice! Or so TPM Muckraker reports.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is scheduled to appear before the House Oversight and Goverment Reform Committee Thursday to answer questions about corruption within the Iraqi government, the possibility of political reconciliation in that war-ravaged country and the department's controversial security contract with Blackwater USA, according to a release from the committee.

Oversight Chairman Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.) has been pressing Rice and other agency officials for months to testify about corruption and the department's contract with Blackwater. According to the release, committee members will also be asking about allegations of misconduct in the construction of the U.S. embassy compound in Baghdad.
It appears that the last Bushies may be starting to waver and fall.

The most effective thing the Democrats have done since gaining their small majority in Congress, in my opinion, has been to investigate corruption. Corruption in the Justice Department? Those investigations led to the resignations of both Alberto Gonzalez and Karl Rove. Corruption in the State Department? The investigations have been blocked so far by Secretary Rice's refusal to testify, but they have already uncovered missing billions, criminal mercenaries and fraudulent construction contracts.

Can Rice's resignation be far behind? She's already all but invisible. Despite all the lovely noises about diplomacy the Bushies are making, we almost never read about Dr. Rice actually, um, DOING anything...and when she does, it's usually the wrong thing, and with a minder like Robert Gates to hold her hand.

If I were perfect, like Ann Coulter, I would thank Jeebus for public servants like Henry Waxman. As it is, I'll have to be content with sending him thanks and $$$$.

I hope he understands.

Nasty, Bad, Naughty State Department!

Since the Democratic Congress took over in January, the House and Senate have been working round the clock to try to, as Speaker Pelosi famously stated, "drain the swamp" of the Bush Administration's incredible corruption.

Representative Henry Waxman (otherwise known as "The Mustache of Justice") and Senator Patrick Leahy (the recipient of Dick Cheney's kind words on the Senate floor) started with the Justice Department, and they have been extremely successful in stopping KKKarl Rove's Lackey, Alberto Gonzales, from stealing the 2008 election by engaging in vote-caging and bogus investigations against strong Democratic candidates. They have also been able to clean out all the most highly-placed political operatives masquerading as public servants (think about 15 "heckuva job" Brownies). Notice that they have not held confirmation hearings on Gonzo's replacement (who, by the way, is much more of a consensus nominee than Bush originally wanted)? That's because Patrick Leahy said those hearings won't happen until the DOJ records he's been requesting for months are turned over.

Now, Waxman has turned his attention to the State Department, the lair of one of my least favorite Fascists, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. As the Democrats investigate how Blackwater and other private military contractors have conducted their operations in Iraq, the State Department has begun to come under intense scrutiny. And as Larry Craig would say...well, they have not been good little boys and girls AT ALL.

WASHINGTON — Aides to State Department Inspector General Howard Krongard threatened two investigators with retaliation this week if they cooperate with a congressional probe into Krongard's office, the chairman of a House of Representatives panel and other U.S. officials said Friday.

The allegations are the latest in a growing uproar surrounding Krongard. Current and former officials in his office charge that he impeded investigations into alleged arms smuggling by employees of the private security firm Blackwater and into faulty construction of the new U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

Krongard has denied the charges and is due to appear before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee next month.

Of course, Krongard is the latest Lackey set up as a fall guy for the Big Kahuna of Korruption, Madame Secretary herself.

WASHINGTON — Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Cal., charged Tuesday that Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her aides are trying to impede congressional probes into corruption in Iraq and the activities of controversial private military contractor Blackwater USA.

Waxman, chairman of the House oversight committee, complained in a letter to Rice that the State Department this week barred its officials from talking to Congress about corruption in Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki's government unless those discussions are kept secret.

The department also retroactively classified a study drafted by the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad that reportedly details extensive corruption in al-Maliki's government, Waxman said.

"Your position seems to be that positive information about the Maliki government may be disseminated publicly, but any criticism of the government must be treated as a national security secret," Waxman told Rice.

"You are wrong to interfere with the committee's inquiry," he wrote.

Something tells me that, although he committed his fair share of crimes for George W. Bush, General Colin Powell would not have put up with the privatization of the Armed Forces by the loyal Bushies. Yet another reason he had to go?
