A Bittersweet Experience

As some of my regular readers know, I am a professional singer as well as a politics-obsessed bloggista. Last night, I was privileged to sing in a Concert for Life, sponsored by the Project People Foundation. The experience left an indelible impression on me.

My part in the concert was small: I was there as a "backup" for the Cantor at the temple where I sing. (That temple has long been a partner in PPF's efforts). The rest of the time, I was able to sit, snack, and enjoy the other performers. And what a show it was!

Project People Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of impoverished and AIDs-scourged South Africans. To highlight this focus, PPF opened the concert with performances from South Africans who are part of the cast of The Lion King. They danced and sang with amazing energy, skill and passion. Then, an absolutely phenomenal gospel group sang several pieces that were so inspiring, they almost convinced me to convert. (Oy!) In the middle of all of this was a celebration of Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday, complete with a gorgeous cake.

Finally, the gospel choir closed with a knockout performance of "We Shall Overcome," with the first verse sung in Hebrew to honor the Temple's participation. The entire room stood up and held hands spontaneously. It was incredibly moving to touch strangers and colleagues in such a comfortable way, and sing along with that ultimate anthem of faith and resolve.

That was the sweet, and how sweet it was.

And now, for the bitter.

The performance took place at a large, prominent, mostly African-American church. Barack Obama's name was mentioned twice by various speakers, both times in the context of how inspiring it was as an example to children and adults that an African-American could be nominated as a Presidential candidate. (He hasn't clinched the nomination yet, but I knew where they were coming from.) The folks in the room seemed to agree (I saw a few nods and heard a quiet "Yes!" or two), but there was no applause or loud affirmation of these statements. (And believe me, this crowd was not shy - if you've ever been to a service in a black church, you know what I'm talking about.)

In fact, both of these statements were made by men, and I saw some female faces around the room freeze a little, as mine did. I wondered if the two thoughts that went through my head were running through theirs:

1) Women of color could have been inspired by Hillary as well as Obama; and

2) Why isn't he better?

Let's address #1 first.

Reverend Jeremiah Wright mentioned Hillary Clinton in his controversial "God Damn America" sermon, and his remarks were instructive. He asserted that Hillary hadn't had to work twice as hard as a white man to get the same job. It was a laughable and hugely ironic statement in the context of this primary, considering that Hillary has now all but lost the nomination to a man, although she was the winner of the popular vote and has a resume that, by any objective measure, dwarfs Obama's.

Clearly, gender equality is not a part of Reverend Wright's awareness. As every woman in his congregation could have told him, women do have to work twice as hard as a man in order to get the same job. Of course, even if they are fortunate enough to get such a job, they are paid, on average, 77 cents to the man's dollar.

Is there any reason to assume that Hillary Clinton would not continue her work to gain gender equality as President? No. The only way to beat Hillary was to smear her with false accusations of racism and race-baiting, and that is exactly what his campaign did. Out of an understandable sense of community, only a brave few African-Americans stood up for her or Bill Clinton in the face of Obama's divisive tactics, and those who did were intimidated with primary challenges or, in some cases, death threats from the Obama camp.

As frustrating as #1 is to me, #2 is what really hurt. Why is he The One, as Oprah famously dubbed him? What has he ever done for the black community? What has he promised to do for the black community? Why does he talk down to the NAACP and perpetuate white stereotypes about his own people?

Why doesn't he appreciate how much his community needs a figure of great stature, a person who aspires to be a fighter for social justice for all Americans, a person who strives for peace and an end to institutionalized racism and bigotry of all kinds - yes, even unto sexism and homophobia? Why isn't he humbled a bit by what the unqualified support of the black community means?

It breaks my heart that Senator Obama was not asked these questions by the Party Leaders before they decided to elevate him to national status. Fair or not, an African-American candidate will bear the burdens of his long-suffering community on his shoulders, just as Hillary would be expected to bear the burdens of long-suffering women on hers. And as I looked at all the faces around me last night, holding hands with a beautiful stranger and pledging to overcome, I could only think: African-Americans deserve better. They deserve so much better than vague platitudes about hope and change. They deserve a deep understanding of their plight and a lifelong commitment of time and resources, of heart and soul, towards mitigating that plight.

For all of our sakes, I hope they get what they deserve from America and, should he prevail, Barack Obama. As we all know, it's been a long time coming.

Shhhhh....

be vewy vewy quiet. My husband is napping. Heheheheheheheheh!

So, SOME people seem to, like, want beach blogging and stuff! Well, normally I would have done more by now, but believe it or not, the weather has been sucky! It is so incredibly rare to have rain in Aruba that everyone on the island is in shock. Luckily, the last of the storm seems to have passed, and the rain this morning will probably be the last, for the next four months!

I have a newfangled Blackberry and have taken some fun photos, which I hope to [ahem] figure out how to download tomorrow! But I wanted to wait till I had some great beach shots first. We haven't even seen a lot of iguanas this year - they've been hiding from the rain! Jeez!

On the upside, we are winning at the casinos and eating some incredible food. Our hotel is very nice and the room opens right onto the beach. So it's all good...and tomorrow night, the Sunset Sail awaits, with champagne and delicious Dutch chocolates.

Sending you all lovely breezes and starlit nights!

White Woman Going Missing in Aruba!

Don't worry, I'm coming back...but tomorrow morning, hubby and I are flying to our favorite slice of Paradise. If you don't know why we love it so much, here are some pics of our trip last year.

I will be blogging, but not as often. I will be too blissed out by the Aruban breezes, the white sands, the indigo waters and the incredible food and drink.

What more could a gal ask for?

You Know You Are Absent-Minded When...

your commenters have to remind you about your own BlogaVersary!!! Thanks very much, Timmy B!

It's hard to believe I branched out and started bloviating here just one year ago today. Of course, I've always been a world-champeen provider of hot air, as my friends and relatives will tell ya. :-)

Thanks to everyone who reads this blog for sticking with me through a very, very tough primary season. We may not agree, but respect me, and I'll respect you.

Onward and upward!

Happy Mothers' Day!

Today is a good day to appreciate not just mothers, but all women who have made you who you are today. Your friends, your sisters, your daughters, your aunts, cousins and nieces, your stepmothers, your grandmothers, your heroines - they are brave, exceptional, kind, loving, intelligent, and they deserve your attention and respect, this day and every day. Ladies, you rock!

If you are fortunate enough to still have your mother around, make sure you send her some extra love and hugs today.

And for you sentimental types, here is a beautiful video made by Chelsea Clinton for her mother. If you don't have a tear in your eye after you watch, well...you're just hard-hearted, that's all! :-)

Have a great day, women of the world. You deserve it!

Got a Fevah!

No, seriously, I really do. I'm only partially non-delirious.

Will post more when I'm back to my (ab) normal self.

Meanwhile, check out the good folks on my blogroll. Especially cute kitties at Plush Life, if you don't feel like bad news today...

Remembering Mom...and Feminism

My mother died in March of 1996. It's been 12 years now, and the pain has mostly gone away. But I've found myself thinking even more about her than usual this year.

Perhaps it has to do with the possibility of the election of the first woman President of the United States, but in any case, Mom - this one's for you.

My mother was a free-thinker. For example, she was an atheist whose father was blacklisted for Communism in the 50's. (He really was a Communist, unlike some who were just caught in McCarthy's sick web, but of course, he was just a typical Jewish screenwriter of the times, not an eeeevil spy for the Russians.) Politically, she was quite liberal - an original Beatnik, in fact. She was, sometimes embarrassingly so for my Virgoan sensibilities, open about sex.

Oddly enough, she was also somewhat anti-feminist.

Let me explain that a bit. She had nothing against the goals of the feminist movement, but she felt that women being "free" to join the workforce was the wrong focus. Instead, she would have preferred that women get paid for raising the children and taking care of the household. "This whole 'women working full-time' thing is the biggest rip-off men ever perpetrated on women," she once told me in a conversation I will never forget. "We already work full-time! Now we've got the possibility of two full-time jobs with pay for only one of them. Doesn't sound like a good deal to me!" She also thought that bra-burning was stupid. "Hurts us more than it hurts them," she said, in her typical blunt manner. And what about equality with men? "We are not physically equal to men. It makes us look stupid to suggest that we are, or that we can and should do a lot of the things men do. We should be celebrating our differences, not pretending they don't exist!"

Interesting perspective, eh?

Here's to you, my Mamacita. I miss your original brain, your empathy and your loving heart every day. I hope that somewhere, somehow, I am making you proud.

What I Learned in 2007

2007 was a very tough year for many people - most recently and tragically, for Benazir Bhutto and her family. Still, I hope we can all learn something from our trials and tribulations. Here are some things I learned:

Political Lesson of 2007: Republics Really Are Bent On Destroying America.

It's true. Since the Democrats took over and Congress suddenly began to take its oversight power back, we've confirmed that the Republic Party is nothing but a criminal enterprise dedicated to its own enrichment and continuance. They're willing to wiretap every American; allow terrorist attacks to go unpunished; put cronies in charge of every regulatory agency; ignore the basic needs of our soldiers in the field and deny them proper care when they return from battle; lie repeatedly under oath to Congress; torture, render and kill hundreds of thousands; allow nuclear-armed foreign nations to degenerate into chaos while attacking weak nations for their resources; claim "no one could have predicted" the horrible effects of Hurricane Katrina; permit our food, medicine and consumer goods to become contaminated with toxins; refuse to take any action to prevent global warming from becoming irreversible; and hollow out the very structure of our government and our Constitution by pursuing the theory of the "unitary executive."

Why do they do it? In order to make a few bucks. THAT'S IT. Truly, these are the most venal, disgusting and repulsive criminals on the planet, and they must be driven out of power as soon as possible.

Personal Lesson of 2007: Appreciate What You Have, Even If You Can't Take Credit for It.

When we are born into this life, certain gifts come along with us. Whether the Giant Green Lizard or genetics have given us that je ne sais quoi, we all have something that makes us special. Yet it's all too easy for some of us (cough me cough) to discount our unique qualities because we didn't earn them, or to bemoan them because they are not what society prizes. Well, enough of that! This year, I vow to enjoy the things that make me madamab, and I hope you will too.

A very, very happy 2008 to all, and may it be a vast improvement over 2007.

Twas the Friday Before Christmas...

and all through the city
the Atriots came, to gather. So witty
and fun (with Simels' beret!) was it all,
I'm so glad I finally answered the call!

Happy Holidays to everyone, whatever you're doing! We're off to visit our relatives in Maryland/Virginia.

Madamab So Sad.

We did not move yesterday. Our apartment did not sell yet despite the contract being signed 10/9/07. It looks like we will be living out of boxes for, at best, another month, and if our buyer is not approved by the Co-op Board, it could be months.

Predicted Nervous Breakdown Occurring on Schedule.

May I just say that attempting to sell one's place and buy someone else's place at the same time is not conducive to one's mental or emotional health? Especially, hypothetically speaking of course, when the attorneys and brokers one is dealing with are incompetent and/or dishonest?

Timing is everything in real estate, and ours just got screwed up beyond belief. Now, both our sale and our purchase are in jeopardy and our moving date is postponed or canceled.

I know that in the grand scheme of things, it's probably somehow for the best, but in the meantime, I've laid in a good supply of dark chocolate...

Hunger in the Land of Plenty

In 2006, 35.5 million people went hungry in America. Within that group of people, 11.1 million have what our euphemism-laden society calls "low food security," which means that they literally do not know where their next meal is coming from. Appallingly, many of these suffering Americans are employed, but their jobs pay too little to support them and their families.

It always makes me angry when I hear people in the progressive-liberal community bemoaning the stupidity and passivity of Americans. I wonder how active and informed we would be if we were always worried about their next meal; if we didn't have access to the Internet; or if we didn't have leisure time because we were so "uniquely American" that we had to work three jobs?

According to Maslow's hierarchy of human needs, without the basics of food, clothing and housing, none of us would be able to focus on anything but subsistence. As we all prepare for the institutionalized gorging that is Thanksgiving, perhaps we should spare a moment to think about the more than 10 percent of our country who won't have enough to eat at all.

Moving

So, we're moving on December 1st and we still don't have a contract with the sellers of the place we're buying.

Posting may be light while I have a nervous breakdown....

Happy Halloween!

I don't know about you, but I think we Americans have been scared enough for the past 7 years.

So instead of posting a picture of Rudy JulieAndrews in drag, I'm linking to some of the cutest kitties on the InterWebs. If you haven't discovered Plush Life yet, you're in for a treat.

Tag, I'm It!

So, Sinfonian did this "meme tag" thing to me when I was emphatically NOT blogging on Aruba. Of course, I am now 100 blog-years too late with this now, but hey! A promise is a promise. Here goes nothing.

First, to post the rules:

1. All right, here are the rules.
2. We have to post these rules before we give you the facts.
3. Players start with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
4. People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules.
5. At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names. Don’t forget to leave them a comment telling them they’re tagged, and to read your blog.

Okay, everyone I know has been tagged, so I'm excusing myself from #5. But I'll do the rest.

Eight Random Facts about Me:

1) I am generally late to every trend. (Took me, like, 5 years to buy a DVD player.) So, this is par for the course.

2) My favorite color is purple. I am fond of all things purple, including grape soda.

3) I have a terrible weakness for John Hughes movies.

4) If I had my druthers, I'd do nothing but sing opera, write about politics, and design purty websites for artistic people.

5) I have been deliriously happily married for the past ten years.

6) My stepmother is both African-American AND Jewish. And she didn't have to convert.

7) My step-grandfather was Joan Crawford's lover and was mentioned in Christina Crawford's classic "Mommie Dearest" as "Uncle David".

8) I'm a Virgo with a Libra moon and a Scorpio rising.

Finito!!!
