What I Learned in 2007

2007 was a very tough year for many people - most recently and tragically, for Benazir Bhutto and her family. Still, I hope we can all learn something from our trials and tribulations. Here are some things I learned:

Political Lesson of 2007: Republics Really Are Bent On Destroying America.

It's true. Since the Democrats took over and Congress suddenly began to take its oversight power back, we've confirmed that the Republic Party is nothing but a criminal enterprise dedicated to its own enrichment and continuance. They're willing to wiretap every American; allow terrorist attacks to go unpunished; put cronies in charge of every regulatory agency; ignore the basic needs of our soldiers in the field and deny them proper care when they return from battle; lie repeatedly under oath to Congress; torture, render and kill hundreds of thousands; allow nuclear-armed foreign nations to degenerate into chaos while attacking weak nations for their resources; claim "no one could have predicted" the horrible effects of Hurricane Katrina; permit our food, medicine and consumer goods to become contaminated with toxins; refuse to take any action to prevent global warming from becoming irreversible; and hollow out the very structure of our government and our Constitution by pursuing the theory of the "unitary executive."

Why do they do it? In order to make a few bucks. THAT'S IT. Truly, these are the most venal, disgusting and repulsive criminals on the planet, and they must be driven out of power as soon as possible.

Personal Lesson of 2007: Appreciate What You Have, Even If You Can't Take Credit for It.

When we are born into this life, certain gifts come along with us. Whether the Giant Green Lizard or genetics have given us that je ne sais quoi, we all have something that makes us special. Yet it's all too easy for some of us (cough me cough) to discount our unique qualities because we didn't earn them, or to bemoan them because they are not what society prizes. Well, enough of that! This year, I vow to enjoy the things that make me madamab, and I hope you will too.

A very, very happy 2008 to all, and may it be a vast improvement over 2007.

Which War Crime Is Worse?

I feel like Keith Olbermann as I ponder which BushCheney war crime will be counted by history as the Worst! War Crime! In the Worrrrrrrrlllllld!

Is it the torturing and rendering of suspected terrorists, which is against U.S. and International Law?

Is it the propagandizing of the citizenry and elected representatives thereof in support of dragging us into wars for empire and diminishing natural resources? (Note: This one is a three-fer: Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran all fall into this category.)

Is it the treasonous outing of a CIA agent who was working to protect America from nuclear proliferation in Iran and elsewhere?

We have smoking gun evidence of all these crimes, some of them even being admitted by their various perpetrators. Yet although investigations are taking place, and many quite effectively, so far the masterminds behind them - Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Donald Rumsfeld, George Bush - have remained free to continue to torture, maim and kill as many as they wish in the name of "national security." Thank goodness 25% of cowardly, worthless, un-American Americans feel safer - that's certainly worth allowing war criminals to go unpunished!

Impeach. Indict. Incarcerate.

Intelligence

Remember how the reason we got everything wrong in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq was bad, naughty, nasty intelligence, and how George Tenet was the most incompetent "Medal of Freedom" winner ever?

Well, maybe it wasn't quite as black and white as all that.

Months before the Iraq invasion, President Bush apparently ignored a 2002 Oval Office briefing in which CIA director George Tenet provided the president with intelligence that Saddam Hussein did not possess weapons of mass destruction, according to former Clinton advisor and Salon columnist Sidney Blumenthal.

[snip]

Blumenthal also adds that the intelligence from that day was left out of the National Intelligence Estimate of October 2002, which definitively stated that had WMD.

"The president had no interest in the intelligence," a CIA officer disclosed. "Bush didn't give a fuck about the intelligence. He had his mind made up."

"No one in Congress was aware of the secret intelligence that Saddam had no WMD as the House of Representatives and the Senate voted, a week after the submission of the NIE, on the Authorization for Use of Military Force in Iraq," Blumenthal writes. "The information, moreover, was not circulated within the CIA among those agents involved in operations to prove whether Saddam had WMD."

Blumenthal's sources confirm a 2006 interview with the CIA's chief of clandestine operations for Europe, Tyler Drumheller, who told CBS's 60 Minutes that the his agency had received intelligence from Saddam Hussein's foreign minister, Naji Sabri, indicating Iraq possessed no WMD.

"[The two former CIA officers] have confirmed Drumheller's account to me and provided the background to the story of how the information that might have stopped the invasion of Iraq was twisted in order to justify it," Blumenthal reports. "They described what Tenet said to Bush about the lack of WMD, and how Bush responded, and noted that Tenet never shared Sabri's intelligence with then Secretary of State Colin Powell."

Powell would later present US evidence justifying the preemptive invasion of Iraq to the United Nations--without knowledge of the Sabri information.
Congress didn't have the intelligence. Colin Powell didn't have the intelligence. All they saw was cherry-picked reportage that confirmed the war cheerleaders' propaganda.

Apparently, the 'lack of intelligence'...was Bush's.

And that, I'm sure, surprises no one.

Oh. My. GUH.

Schadenfreude, thy name is Senator Larry Craig (Fake Family Values Closeted Republic-Idaho). (Memo to self: If I am ever elected to office, I will NOT seek anonymous sex in an airport restroom. It's just possible that something might go wrong.)

The arresting officer, Sgt. Dave Karsnia, reported the incident thus:

“At 1216 hours, Craig tapped his right foot. I recognized this as a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his toes several times and moves his foot closer to my foot. I moved my foot up and down slowly. While this was occurring, the male in the stall to my right was still present. I could hear several unknown persons in the restroom that appeared to use the restroom for its intended use. The presence of others did not seem to deter Craig as he moved his right foot so that it touched the side of my left foot which was within my stall area,” the report states.

Craig then proceeded to swipe his hand under the stall divider several times, and Karsnia noted in his report that “I could ... see Craig had a gold ring on his ring finger as his hand was on my side of the stall divider.”

Karsnia then held his police identification down by the floor so that Craig could see it.

“With my left hand near the floor, I pointed towards the exit. Craig responded, ‘No!’ I again pointed towards the exit. Craig exited the stall with his roller bags without flushing the toilet. ... Craig said he would not go. I told Craig that he was under arrest, he had to go, and that I didn’t want to make a scene. Craig then left the restroom.”

In a recorded interview after his arrest, Craig “either disagreed with me or ‘didn’t recall’ the events as they happened,” the report states.

Craig stated “that he has a wide stance when going to the bathroom and that his foot may have touched mine,” the report states. Craig also told the arresting officer that he reached down with his right hand to pick up a piece of paper that was on the floor.

“It should be noted that there was not a piece of paper on the bathroom floor, nor did Craig pick up a piece of paper,” the arresting officer said in the report.

Seriously. Are there any elected male Republics that are NOT closeted gay men - or child molesters? I am quite serious about this question, because I've been to this website. And this one. Check it out...and ponder.

By the way...Senator Craig is up for re-election in 2008. How do you think that campaign will go?

How to Stop the Occupation of Iraq

I don't say much about the Iraq war on this blog, because to me, it's a symptom of our dysfunctional government, not a first cause.

Our founding fathers knew that we cannot function as a democracy without a well-informed citizenry. Unfortunately for America, our media has consolidated into a giant Military-Industrial Complex-promoting propaganda machine, bent on spreading disinformation to improve its bottom line. Thus, in 1999, the machine chose George W. Bush over Al Gore for president, despite Bush's obvious unsuitability to run anything larger than a lemonade stand.

The machine relentlessly pounded Al's "earth tones", his "sighing", his "lack of authenticity". It called him wooden and elitist. It made up lies about him (most famously, that he claimed to have invented the Internet), then used its giant echo chamber to cement those lies in unsuspecting American minds.
Of course, the real reason the machine didn't like Big Al was because he was well-known to be a fierce advocate for non-petroleum-based energy sources; and unlike George Bush, Al was not interested in the neo-con foreign policy paradigm. Sure, his vice president-wannabe, Joe Lieberman, was a neo-con; but until Dick Cheney took over, the vice-president's job was mainly a presidential placeholder. The machine knew Lieberman would have no chance at converting Al Gore to his paranoid, militaristic worldview.

There would be no wars for oil in an Al Gore presidency; a disaster for the machine, for another eight or sixteen years of peace and prosperity could put the MIC out of business. Then, what would the multi-chinned captains of industry do with themselves? Certainly they could not compete in the free market without all the subsidies and no-bid contracts the government had given them for so many years. My heavens, what would the Pentagon do to justify its enormous budget?

Thus, the machine stifled all honest debate about the two candidates. Thus, George W. Bush, the "Texecutioner", future murderer of hundreds of thousands, was portrayed as a compassionate, down-to-earth man, and Al Gore, the man who wants to save the planet and promote a peaceful foreign policy, was portrayed as a sneering elitist. Thus, when the governor of Florida, Bush's brother, fixed the 2000 election, the machine showed no outrage and deemed all who recognized it to be conspiracy theorists. Thus, when the Supreme Court decided that the vote counting needed to stop in Florida, and that Bush was to be appointed President, the machine acted as though Bush had legitimacy as President. 9/11 gave it all the excuses it needed to worship Bush as a savior-daddy. And thus, when the case for war in Iraq was phonier than Bush's cowboy persona, the machine screamed and hollered about how Saddam was worse than Hitler and had nuclear warheads pointed at all of our heads. Besides, didn't Sadama bin Hussein attack us on 9/11? Hmmmmmmmmm?

For the past six years, thanks to our dysfunctional media, we have been stuck with the Bush-Cheney presidency, the most diabolical criminal organization to ever take charge of the levers of government. And Bush-Cheney have arrogated the powers of a dictator unto themselves, with the complicity of the machine and a supremely corrupt Republican majority in Congress.

But now the Democrats have finally gotten control of Congress (by a very slim, non-veto-proof majority, of course). How then, can we stop this cabal before they completely destroy our country?

I may be totally cynical, but I don't think Bush and Cheney can be stopped by either legislation or cutting off their funds. Bush's signing statements prove that he cares nothing for the law, and when they needed funds for the original invasion of Iraq, they simply stole it from the budget for the war in Afghanistan. The only answer is impeachment and removal from office.

I have recently heard from two different Washington insiders (Richard Wolffe and Brent Budowsky, on different sides of the political spectrum) that the Democrats plan to impeach Bush and Cheney in September, after General Petraeus gives his report to Congress.

Giant Green Lizard, make it so; the sooner the better.

The Republican Party is not a Political Party. It's a Criminal Organization.

Say it loud. Say it often.

It explains so much.

It's why there are so many Republicans in jail, under indictment or under investigation. If we investigated every single one of these guys in all the branches of government, I have absolutely no doubt that there is a criminal act in each and every one of their backgrounds (usually involving sex or money). But of course, you can't be a playa unless you're a made man (or woman), because the Republican Party is a criminal organization.

It cures Republic Scandal Fatigue (RSF) without the use of alcohol or drugs.

At this point, I personally am getting dizzy trying to keep up with all the laws these guys are breaking. I mean, what with Cheney and Bush pretending the government is their personal cash register and toy soldier generator, respectively, and with all the Congresscritters seemingly unable to deal with their sexual and monetary needs without resorting to crime, we've got a new horror assaulting us every day. It's enough mishegoss to make you permanently brain-fogged, unless you remember that the Republican Party is a criminal organization.

Ahhhh! I feel better already.

The "Justice" Department: Breaking Law A-OK!

From an L.A. Times story posted late last night:

WASHINGTON — In a broadly worded legal opinion, the Justice Department has concluded that President Bush's former top lawyer, and possibly other senior White House officials, can ignore subpoenas from Congress to testify about the firings of U.S. attorneys.

The three-page opinion raises questions about whether the Justice Department would prosecute senior administration officials if Congress voted to hold them in contempt for not cooperating with the investigation into the firing last year of eight top prosecutors.

Forgive me, but I can't keep from yelling for a moment:

RULE OF LAW! RULE OF LAW! RULE! OF! LAW!

Ahh, I feel better...

IMHO, this type of Nixonian scenario - where the "Justice" Department completely breaks free of legal constraints and attempts to protect the Administration at all costs - is exactly why the Democrats went after the DOJ right away.

If "Justice" were still operating unchecked, as it was until January 2007, the political hacks that infested it would still be there. (Instead, the DOJ is like a war zone, with all top officials but the endlessly corrupt Alberto Gonzalez having to resign in disgrace.) Vote caging and other nefarious election-stealing schemes would be proceeding apace. And the "integrity" (I'm just unable to stop air-quoting, because these words have no meaning to the loyal Bushies) of the Attorney General would remain unquestioned.

What can be done about it? The words "special prosecutor" come to mind. (Hmmmm, I wonder if Bill Clinton is available...)

At this point, I picture the Administration collectively as the Black Knight in "Monty Python's The Holy Grail." They're standing in the road with their arms and legs chopped off, yelling "Nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah! I win! I win! I win!" These delusional criminals still believe they're creating their own reality. But the American people have caught on. The spin isn't working any more.

And in a democracy, which we still barely have, if you don't have the support of the people, you don't win. You lose. And very often, you wear an orange jumpsuit.
