Conservative Lying Liars, Historical Revisionist Edition

So, yesterday I figured my blood pressure had slipped a little low. I wandered over to The New York Times to see what David "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth-Grader" Brooks had to say. I mean, I find myself agreeing with both Ed Koch AND Paul Krugman these days, so why not give Bobo a try?

Let's just say, the man did not disappoint.

The first part of the editorial was actually quite well-written. I wondered if my Bizarro-World experiences lately had caused me to hallucinate.

We’re entering an era of epic legislation. There are at least five large problems that will compel the federal government to act in gigantic ways over the next few years.

First, there is the erosion of the social contract. Private sector firms are less likely to provide health benefits, producing a desperate need for health care reform. Second, there is the energy shortage. Rising Asian demand strains worldwide supply, threatening industry and consumers, and producing calls for a bold energy initiative. Third, there is the stagnation in human capital. During the 20th century, Americans were better educated than the citizens of any other power. Since 1970, that lead has been forfeited, producing inequality and wage stagnation. To compete, the U.S. will require a series of human capital initiatives.

Fourth, there’s financial market reform. In an intricately connected world, even Republican administrations cannot allow big institutions to fail. If government is going to guarantee against failure, then it is inevitably going to get more involved in regulating how businesses are run. Fifth, there’s infrastructure reform. The U.S. transportation system is in shambles and will require major new projects.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is the first time I've seen anyone in the MCM lay out the massive problems that face the next administration so succinctly. My eyes were wide with astonishment and happiness. Was this a new era of substantive political discussion by the New York Times?

Of course not. Read on, if you dare.

All of this means that the next few years will be an age of government activism. You may think, therefore, that this situation is ripe for Democratic dominance. The Democrats are the natural party of federal vigor. Voters prefer Democratic approaches to issues like health care and education by as much as 25 percentage points.

Yet, historically, periods of great governmental change have often been periods of conservative rule. It’s as if voters understand that they need big changes, but they want those changes planned and enacted by leaders who will restrain the pace of change and prevent radical excess.
No, it's as if David Brooks stopped reading history after 1929. But hey, he has to justify his McCain love somehow. Who cares if he completely ignores FDR's four terms in office, during which the New Deal was created and successfully implemented? Or perhaps he is forgetting LBJ and the Civil Rights Amendment?

The only "conservative" American President he could find to justify his preposterous thesis was Theodore Roosevelt, who resembles John McCain about as much as Beverly Sills resembles Britney Spears. His other example was Benjamin Disraeli, because conservatism in England is exactly the same as conservatism in America. [snort] In any case, here is how McCain equals The Rough Rider in the fuzzy brain of Mr. Brooks.

"The true function of the state as it interferes in social life,” Roosevelt wrote, “should be to make the chances of competition more even, not to abolish them.”

John McCain’s challenge is to recreate this model. He will never get as many cheers in Germany as Barack Obama, but for a century his family has embodied American heroism.
Ah, there it is - that delightful soupçon of élitism without which a Brooks column just isn't complete. You know you simply cannot implement change unless your family has been in America for at least 100 years being all heroic and stuff. Otherwise it's just change for change's sake! The White House will be painted in rainbow stripes, the Oval Office will smell like patchouli, and President Democrat will enact legislation forcing all Americans to wear their underwear on the outside. The Horror!

The column is a laughable effort by Brooks, to be sure, but to be fair, conservative propagandists are having a harder and harder time pushing their line these days. After all, Bush has proven that today's conservatism (a toxic stew of X-treme Reagonomics wedded to a Christofascist domestic policy and a neo-conservative foreign policy) is a recipe for disaster - the results of which Brooks readily acknowledges in the first portion of his column. The problem is, how to keep Democrats from another four decades of legislative - and possibly executive - dominance?

Poor Bobo. It's hard work being a Minister of Truthiness these days.

At least I know that in this world where every day seems to be Opposite Day, David Brooks can still be counted on to raise the blood pressure of almost everyone who reads his mind-blowingly crapulent bloviating.

Irony is Deader than Dick Cheney's Soul.

I refuse to honor the hysteria regarding Senator Clinton's statement about extended primaries (which included a reference to RFK's tragic assassination). If RFK Jr. isn't offended, I don't know why anyone else would be.

However, I would like to take a look at the incredible behavior of the press corps during this brouhaha.

It's been, oh, at least 400 days now that MSNBC has been obsessing on what Hillary was thinking when she made this statement. I have marvelled many times at the amazing mind-reading abilities that the media appears to have when it comes to the Clintons (and most Democrats in general). Apparently Hillary was wishin' and hopin' that Senator Obama would be assassinated when she was...talking about a historical event that occurred in June during an extended primary season. And when she never even mentioned Obama's name.

Wow, I never knew that a presidential hopeful should be excoriated and convicted as Teh Evil because of thoughts she thunk!

Especially since our national press corps has COMPLETELY IGNORED THE ACTUAL MURDERERS IN THE WHITE HOUSE.

I mean, we've got Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice, haven't we? (Rumsfeld can't even go into certain countries for fear of being arrested for war crimes.) Through malevolence, incompetence or sheer unadulterated greed, these Asses of Evil are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.

Somehow, I don't see them being excoriated. Somehow I don't see their characters being constantly called into question and organizations like C.U.N.T. being formed to stop them. Somehow I don't see calls for impeachment or any accountability whatsoever for these monsters.

No, once again, IACF rules the day.

They can't talk about Bush and his cronies any more, after all. Remember that KKKarl works for Newsweek now.

The corruption of the corporate media is complete.

The Word Heard Round the World.

"Sweetie."

Ah, how that word encapsulates the incredible amounts of misogyny and sexism that has been directed at Senator Clinton, sometimes by her opponents, but most often by the media, both corporate and "progressive!"

Don't believe me about this? Well, here are some sources for you.

Soon after Senator Obama inappropriately used the word "Sweetie" to dismissively refuse to answer a female reporter's question, Senator Hillary Clinton was interviewed by the Washington Post and asked about the roles of sexism and racism in the historic campaigns of both Democrats.

Here is the paragraph that stood out to me:

Oppression of women and discrimination against women is universal. You can go to places in the world where there are no racial distinctions except everyone is joined together in their oppression of women. The treatment of women is the single biggest problem we have politically and socially in the world. If you look at the extremism and the fundamentalism, it is all about controlling women, at it's base. The idea that we would have a presidential campaign in which so much of what has occurred that has been very sexist would be just shrugged off I think is a very unfortunate commentary about the lack of seriousness that should be applied to any kind of discrimination or prejudice. I have spent my entire life trying to stand up for civil rights and women's rights and human rights and I abhor wherever it is discrimination is present.
This, folks, is the awareness of a person who is ready to become president of the United States. She sees the bigger picture. She understands that all forms of social injustice are unacceptable, but that whenever the government fails to do its job, women are disproportionately the ones that suffer (yes, gasp! racism affects women too!). Where racism is not a factor, somehow, women manage to be oppressed as well. Look at China; racially homogenous, for the most part, yet determined to treat women as inferiors with very few civil rights.

Senator Clinton also states that the goal of fundamentalism, such as we find in every country and every religion, is predominantly the control of women. I could not agree with that statement more, and I've felt that way for a very long time. What is the real reason behind blaming "original sin" on Eve? Why must women remain virgins until marriage, but men have no such responsibility? Why are clitorectomies performed? Why are women sometimes unable to become priests? Why is birth control not acceptable by the Catholic Church? Why do women have to cover all but their eyes in fundamentalist Islam, and why are they restricted from any but the most basic freedoms of life? (Note: A great book on this subject is "The Chalice and the Blade," by Riane Eisler. Seriously, if you haven't read it, it's an amazing work about the struggle between the male and female principles throughout human history.)

The media, with its usual blithe lack of self-awareness, has attempted to discredit Senator Clinton's words. But it's too late for that. The mask has fallen off. We're as mad as hell, and we're not going to take it any more.

Good luck getting our votes in November, Barack Obama. You - and the Democratic Party - have stood silently by while the most qualified and viable woman candidate ever has been treated with violent, despicable misogyny. You all can iron your own damn shirts.

He Said, She Said Journamalism

Oy. Every so often, I am reminded why I never watch news on the Teevee.

I was looking for a weather report yesterday morning, and I settled on New York 1. While I waited, the "news" came on.

The first thing I saw was footage of Barack Obama. Apparently, he was speaking about the economy. (I had the sound muted at first and missed most of what he was saying.) Then, a quote from Senator John McCain was displayed and read by the newsbot, basically stating that Senator Obama didn't understand the economy the way John McCaca McMaverick McCain, the most awesomest economic brain evah, did.

Then the newsbot went to the next story.

Did your head explode yet?

I mean, seriously. This type of reportage is like watching two three-year-olds arguing about who hit whom first. Fergodssake, was what Obama said true? Was it not true? Does John McCain understand the economy? What are McCain's economic proposals compared to Obama's? Which would actually benefit American workers, and which would not?

Okay, stop laughing. I know that the days of fact-based television journalism are long since past, although I hope, not forever. I have stated before that our Fourth Estate is broken. Hell, there are blogs that are devoted full-time to the horrors of today's corporate media. MediaMatters.org and The Daily Howler are two of the very best.

But man, every once in a while I get a glimpse of why so many Americans are uninformed about politics. It's not their fault. They watch the Teevee, and they get Twinkies and Doritos instead of chicken, rice and vegetables.

We aren't stupid. Our media is.

It's a damn shame.

The Death of Big Progressive Media

Guys, you blew it.

Air America - you went off the rails. Look what Randi Rhodes did in public. Urinating on herself would have been less embarrassing.

Daily Kos - you've become an echo chamber of ranting lunatics.

Talking Points Memo, Huffington Post, Buzzflash, AmericaBlog - you've become the I Hate Hillary show.

Keith Olbermann - why don't you just foam at the mouth a little more when discussing the presidential race? You and Tweety can spit at each other and compete to see who hates Hillary more.

You can't fix it now, as I understand some of you are belatedly, and insincerely, trying to do. It's too late.

We liberals once looked to you as an alternative to the ravings of Fox News and the relentless pro-Bush spin of the corporate media. Yes, we knew you had a bias, but we needed it, because we needed a dose of reality-based reality instead of Orwellian realish-ness.

At first, we visited and listened with joy. Finally, someone was telling the truth about warrantless wiretapping, torture, anti-Constitutional activities, stolen elections, and so much more!

But then, something changed. Slowly, each outlet picked a side in the Democratic presidential nomination; and amazingly, it was always the same side. Oh, some pretended they were objective, but it was blindingly obvious that progressive media had lined up 100% behind Barack Obama.

Even that would not have been so bad, but once you decided to love Obama, apparently, you decided to hate Hillary Clinton. I mean, really, REALLY hate her. Randi Rhodes was YouTubed saying what she said, but over the past several months, I have seen and heard so many things that are so much worse than that...relentless, non-stop poisoning of the well of public opinion against Hillary.

Let me repeat that.

The progressive media decided to bash, malign, smear and hate the possible Democratic nominee for President.

Now, in a rational universe, Hillary Clinton is a much better pick for liberals than John "McCaca" McCain for president. As I've pointed out many times, her progressive voting record is 91% - check it out on ProgressivePunch.org. She was the only person in recent history to try to bring universal health care to the U.S., and deserves a lot of credit for the SCHIP program. I could go on and on, but let's get real. McCaca is old, incompetent and clueless, and determined to continue the disastrous policies of the Worst President Evah. We simply cannot afford him as President. CANNOT.

But apparently, as I've also pointed out, Obamans really do not understand who the enemy is. They really think that Obama is The One and Hillary is a horrible monster tearing chunks out of his beautiful saintly hide purely for the edification of her own unseemly ambitions. And once you've drunk that Koolaid, you must hold these beliefs, even if you are a progressive news blog, a progressive pundit or a progressive news/talk network.

No more do we hear about Bush and the various machinations of the Dems in Congress in their endless attempts to undo the damage he's done. No more do we hear about McCaca and how flawed he is as a candidate. All we hear is HILLARY LIED! HILLARY CRIED! HILLARY'S DEAD! WHY DOESN'T THAT BITCH DIE?

All I can say is, Big Progressive Media, you have completely lost it. You've lost all your credibility. You've lost listeners, readers and viewers, and you're going to lose more. Because now? Many of us are going to Fox News for balance (I won't do it myself, but many are). Yes, Fox News is less hateful to Hillary and more fair to both candidates than Big Progressive Media. What the hell is wrong with you?

I will never understand why, but you fucked us all over for the sake of Barack Obama and his sweet, sweet Koolaid. And if he's not the nominee, or if he loses the GE? Why, you'll blame evil monster Hillary - but by that time, will anyone care about you?

I sure hope that Koolaid tasted goooooood. Because you've proven the right-wingers right once again: the American left is fucking crazy. We don't even need them to destroy us; we've destroyed ourselves. In a year where we should have won the Presidency by a landslide, we might have handed the presidency to John McCain. KKKarl & Co. are chortling with glee at our puerile stupidity.

There is some good news. Already new and smaller media is rising to compete with the old, but they have an uphill battle against the Hillary Hatred that they are having a hard time winning. I have blogrolled some of them, and I hope you will check them out.

The next time we mount a concerted effort to fight with the Big Boys, we must focus our ammunition on enemy soldiers and stop using friendly fire on our own troops.

If not, Big Progressive Media in this country will always be doomed to die.

Oh, Isn't This Precious.

Not content with "embedding" reporters, preventing photos of coffins and wounded soldiers from being on the TeeVee, and fabricating heroic stories (a la Jessica Lynch) out of whole cloth to gin up support for the occupation of Iraq, we now discover that the Bush government is arresting reporters to control information.

Fascism with a smiley face, eh, Jonah Goldberg? Methinks your puerile little graphic would look quite natural on George Bush's neck.

Associated Press president Tom Curley says his news organization does not buy the government's argument that one of its photographers arrested in Iraq was working on behalf of the enemy, and he alleged the US is rounding up journalists in an attempt to control information.

"To say the least, we see things very differently," Curley commented dryly, regarding photographer Bilal Hussein, who was arrested two years ago and remains in military custody.

Noting that at least a dozen other Iraqi photographers have been detained or arrested, Curley stated, "It's impossible not to conclude that the words and pictures these journalists produced were considered unhelpful to the war effort and that their arrests would have served a broader strategy of information control."
Of course, there is a "legal" basis for these detentions - the putrescent Patriot Act. Ah, poor George Orwell; you thought you were writing a satire, not an instruction manual!

Curley also called on journalists to demand that all the presidential candidates make a commitment to reversing a directive issued by Attorney General John Ashcroft shortly after September 11 that radically restricted the scope of the Freedom of Information Act.

Ashcroft's memo stated, "When you carefully consider FOIA requests and decide to withhold records, in whole or in part, you can be assured that the Department of Justice will defend your decisions unless they lack a sound legal basis or present an unwarranted risk of adverse impact on the ability of other agencies to protect other important records."

Curley told the National Press Club, "When a matter of public policy poses a straight-up choice between the public's rights of access to government and a government effort to infringe or even narrow those rights, journalists cannot pretend to be disinterested observers."

"This is the moment to make it clear to all the presidential candidates how important reversal of the Ashcroft directive is to us and to the people," Curley continued. "We need to ask the candidates at every opportunity ... whether they are willing to appoint an attorney general willing to follow the spirit as well as the letter of the law that protects the people's right to know what their government is doing."
Senators Clinton and Obama, I hope you are listening to this man. We have seen how secrecy and lies have been an integral part of the survival of the most corrupt Administration in history. We need the next President to open the doors once again to transparency and openness in government.

A democracy cannot function without information. Our media has been slowly turned into a Missing White Woman/Shark Attack/Britney Spears infotainment machine. We need to put the news back on the evening news.

Tuck-Tuck-Tucker, GoodBye

Hopeful Wooooooohooooooo!

Tucker Carlson, the formerly bowtied, banal Face of Evil at MSNBC, will apparently be fired today.

I don't know the person who is quoted on the possible reasons for the buh-bye, but Mr. Alex Blaze certainly has a way with words.

"Maybe MSNBC has realized that swinging to the Right to try and shake out Fox News for viewers isn't a winning strategy," opines The Bilerico Project's Alex Blaze. "Or maybe they realized that at least half their commentators should accept the reality that white men aren't oppressed. Or maybe they think that people don't want to watch a bully wannabe talk about his fun days of beating up [gays]. Or maybe they got tired of his history of abusing the rules of logic, evidence, and reality."
May I add to that excellent summation?

Perhaps MSNBC looked at Rachel Maddow, then looked at Tucker, then looked at Rachel again and said, "Hmmmmm....who are people really liking and respecting on this show?"

We don't know who will replace him, or what format the show will take, but I'm optimistic as always, and I'm hoping it's La Maddow. Despite her recent Obamania, she's still one of the most intelligent and insightful liberal/progressive political commentators around; and it sure would be nice to see more of them on my teevee.

When The Media Attacks

Yesterday was a very strange day for Presidential candidates Barack Obama and John "McCaca" McCain.

The New York Times came out with a story about McCain that was extremely bizarre. Full of innuendo and not much else, the story appeared to be alleging two things:

- That McCaca, like all Republics, has a very cozy relationship with lobbyists that contradicts his public stance on ethics and (undeserved) reputation for incorruptibility; and
- That this cozy relationship may have included bundling - not just money bundling, but bundling in the Victorian sense, meaning, um, cuddling. Yes, that's it...cuddling.

This is odd. First of all, they are attacking a Republic, most notably their darling McCaca, whom they have already endorsed for President. I thought they only attacked Democrats in The Times!

Second of all, it seems that they had this story in December, but were persuaded by the McCain campaign to hold it until he became the presumptive nominee. That The Times would agree to this is shocking, but not surprising - after all, they held the Bush spying story until after the 2004 election - but why would they even publish this to begin with?

Well, Radar, via the indispensable Talking Points Memo, has the answer as to the timing, at least. Right-wing publications such as The New Republic found out about the story. Not willing to be scooped, The Times was first off the mark. But unless there is more to this story, I'm quite skeptical at this point.

McCaca firmly denies every aspect of the article, calling it a smear campaign. Whether or not this is a smart tactic remains to be seen, but at least he is on the offense.

In other media attacks, we now come to possibly the most offensive thing I have ever heard a pundit say. Bill O'Really, one of the most loathsome media figures in America, said that if Michelle Obama thinks America is a flawed nation, it is legitimate to lynch her. (Here's what Michelle said, which in a rational world would not be offensive to anyone.)

Now, I know Mr. Bill didn't say "nappy-headed hos," which was enough to get Don Imus fired, and I know it was on the radio and not the TeeVee - but come on! How disgusting was that? He's advocating the lynching death of an African-American woman if she thinks that America is not the most perfectest, most awesomest country evah in the history of the universe. Gee, America has been so wonderful to African-Americans - why would she have any doubt? And in any case, SHE SAID NOTHING OF THE KIND.

This attack by O'Really, unskillfully disguised as support and sympathy, was beyond over-the-top. But where is Senator Obama's response to this? Why isn't he calling for O'Reilly's head? Due to the manipulations of the rightwing scream machine, this non-story has been in play for days now. Remind you of anything? Kerry's joke about Bush that was twisted into "He doesn't support the troops"? The Swiftboating of 2004?

This is just the first salvo in the war against Barack and Michelle Obama. The media has been holding their fire until now, because they assumed that Hillary Clinton would win. Now that it seems more likely that Barack will be the nominee, they are honing the narrative against him. Barack Osama Obama is a scary Muslim. Barack doesn't like Israel. Barack and Michelle don't love America. Barack has too much melanin in his skin. Etcetera etcetera ad infinitum.

I certainly hope that the decision NOT to call O'Really on his horrific and poisonous racism is not reflective of how Senator Obama will deal with the vicious onslaught that is coming, because ignoring it doesn't make it go away. Just ask Al Gore and John Kerry.

But since I've voted for and donated to Hillary, there's not much more I can do for my candidate. I am just going to have to put my fears that Obama is too conciliatory and kumbaya to beat McCain to rest. I'm just going to have to try to be Zen about everything until the nominee is chosen and the Dem-Republic matchup begins...and perhaps even until after the November elections.

But I am really, really terrified that if this is how Obama is going to handle media attacks, he does not have a fucking prayer in November.

Working Refrigerators Found In Hell! Or, Dan Abrams Gets a Clue

Normally I don't watch Dan Abrams, whom I've referred to in private as "The Dandroid." It seemed like everytime I left the TeeVee on after "Countdown" was over, I saw Pat Buchanan's jowly, dyspeptic visage on the screen. It was too much for a gal to take, I tells ya!

But last night, the first thing I saw was a picture of Hillary Clinton, and no scary Republics in sight. Even more intriguing was the question Dan was posing: "Are the networks being too hard on Clinton?"

The segment included Lawrence O'Donnell, Laura Schwartz and Roy Sekoff - all well-known pundits, and in Mr. Sekoff's case, the editor of the influential newsblog The Huffington Post. Dan Abrams put these questions to them all: Why are you predicting the downfall of Hillary Clinton, when she is up in the polls over Obama in Wisconsin, Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania - all states rich in delegates? Why are you not covering this race as it is - a very tight battle for delegates in which Obama's edge is slight, and perhaps non-existent after the next two weeks?

The Dandroid had discovered the Clinton Rules of Journalism. It's okay, Dan - it only took you about 16 years to realize that the networks love to stick it to the Clintons - and by extension, all Democratic frontrunners. But what about the other pundits?

Roy Sekoff's answer: "It's more fun to write vitriol than puffery." Ah, so? Then why is almost every piece on HuffPo pro-Obama and anti-Hillary? Witness this piece by Barbara Ehrenreich declaring him "unstoppable." The article contains both vitriol and puffery. Guess which candidate gets the drooling admiration?
Or should she reconfigure herself, untangle her triangulations, and attempt to appeal to the American people in some deep human way, with or without a tear or two? This, too, would take heavy lifting. Someone needs to tell her that there are better ways to signal conviction than by raising one's voice and drawing out the vowels, as in "I KNOW ..." and "I BELIEVE ..." The frozen smile has to go too, along with the metronymic nodding, which sometimes goes on long enough to suggest a placement within the autism spectrum.
Got it! Hillary is not human. She's robotic, frozen, possibly autistic. How could you vote for such a freak of nature? As Ehrenreich says:

Clinton can put forth all the policy proposals she likes - and many of them are admirable ones - but anyone can see that she's of the same generation and even one of the same families that got us into this checkmate situation in the first place.
Who cares what she'll do as President? She's part of the wrong generation. DISQUALIFIED!!!

Meanwhile, Obama gets this:
So yes, there's a powerful emotional component to Obama-mania, and not just because he's a far more inspiring speaker than his rival. We, perhaps white people especially, look to him for atonement and redemption. All of us, of whatever race, want a fresh start. That's what "change" means right now: Get us out of here!
"Atonement and redemption." And to think that people accuse Obamans of being part of a cult of personality whose followers think he is the Messiah. How utterly fantastical!

Lawrence O'Donnell's response was basically: "You're right, but it makes a better story to have Obama be a come-from-behind winner than to have Ms. Inevitability win the way we all thought she was going to." Oh, well, then, if it makes a better story, by all means, have at it! Don't let those pesky facts bug ya, Larry.

While Sekoff was lying and O'Donnell was truthfully excusing bad punditry, poor, dumb Laura Schwartz didn't understand what Dan was talking about. Exasperated at trying to drill his way through the blonde shellack on her head, Abrams tried smaller words:

"Don't you think it's ridiculous that we cover this election as if it were a sports event? This is the election for the leader of the free world, here!"

Ms. Schwartz was oblivious. "But Dan, the news is 24-7 now! We have to cover the story as it exists in the moment, and in the moment, Senator Obama has won eight in a row!" But never mind that he doesn't have enough delegates to win the nomination, and that Hillary looks strong in four out of the five next states. Somehow that part of the story doesn't exist "now."

I have to say that my husband and I were shouting "THANK YOU!" to Dan Abrams last night. It felt so good to see and hear someone calling the media pundits on their assish-ness - even if it was only a host on cable news, and even if, through disingenuousness or stupidity, the pundits refused to grasp the point.

And even better, there was no Pat Buchanan in sight.

I'm So Excited!

Yes, it's true - I am having a total geekgasm over what happened last night!

We The People are standing up and giving the middle finger to the out-of-touch pundits and pollsters. The participation in the primaries and caucuses is through the roof. The candidates are becoming better and more sharply defined the more they speak to us. And best of all, thanks to the wins of Senators Clinton and McCain in New Hampshire, every major candidate has a shot at the nomination for each party...which means NOBODY KNOWS WHAT WILL HAPPEN! Oooh, unpredictability!

I can't help but see last night, in a broader context, as a win for Americans over the corporate media. I wrote recently on the topic of covering elections merely as "horse races," stating that despite the Beltway Boys' best efforts, we all know that it fucking matters who's President. In MSNBC's exit polling, 49% of all NH Republicans stated they were angry at our Deciderer-In-Chief. For a party that normally votes in lockstep, that's quite a large number. (Yay, George Bush - you united us at last!)

Even some members of the elite punditocracy are starting to face their irrelevance. Tom Brokaw, participating in the election coverage on MSNBC last night, said this:

"We don't have to get in the business of making judgments before the polls have closed and trying to stampede, in effect, the process. Look, I'm not just picking on us, it's part of the culture in which we live these days. But I think that the people out there are going to begin to make judgments about us -- if they haven't already -- if we don't begin to temper that temptation to constantly try to get ahead of what the voters are deciding in many cases as we learned in New Hampshire when they went into the polling booth today or in the last three days. They were making decisions very late....

What we ought to do is invest in the American people in their wisdom."


Why yes, Tom, it would be better to report the facts and trust in the wisdom of the American people, rather than reporting on how you think they should feel and trying to influence the process. That's the way it used to be done back in the Stone Age. It was called...journalism.

Is it possible that after the election of 2008, we will not only see an American Renaissance, but also a re-birth of truth in the corporate media?

Why Joe Lieberman is Wrong, Wrong, Wrong

While the rest of the pack talks and panders and bickers and poses, Chris Dodd takes the time to step away from the Iowa circus and actually work for the good of the people. And who is he working against? George W. Bush and Harry Reid. Now that, Mr. Lieberman, is non-partisan. Something for Connecticut to be proud of.

But that's the trouble with Joe Lieberman, and by extension, with the Beltway handwringers who worship him. Joe doesn't want non-partisanship; he wants bi-partisanship.

While I was watching the Dodd filibuster with other blogging types at First Draft, I made the remark that "bi-partisanship is nothing to be proud of - it's like being half a criminal." I do believe that all remaining elected Republico-Fascists are part of a criminal enterprise, but there's something else there that might be worth exploring.

Here's the thing. The way the Washington "centrists" use the word "bi-partisan," it only means one thing: Move away from American ideals and the rule of law, and towards a right-wing extremist view that less than 25% of Americans agree with. They never, ever expect the Republics to move towards the Democratic side, do they? Can you imagine Joe Klein or David Broder weeping and wailing that the Republics are not moving far enough to the left to accommodate the Democrats? It is to laugh, and cry.

True bi-partisanship - both parties working together for the betterment of America and its people - would be a wonderful thing. Unfortunately for America, the Republic Party is currently taking its pages from the Nazi playbook. They are spying on us; rendering and torturing us; disappearing us; creating a media of pro-Establishment propagandists; empowering the Executive beyond all reasonable interpretation of the law; stealing our elections; invading countries on false premises to steal their resources/gain power in the region; and on and on. To expect the Republics to work towards the good of America at this point, as the Liebermans of the world appear to do, is to be either completely partisan, or completely paid off (not necessarily mutually exclusive, of course).

Since bi-partisanship is not possible at this point, what we should be striving for - and what I believe we really want - is NON-partisanship. There are certain American goals that, in a sane world, should be beyond political affiliation. They are outlined in the Preamble to the Constitution, which goes like this:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Hmm. Unity. Justice. Peace. Security. Caring about the American people. Freedom.

Sounds pretty non-partisan to me.

On My Worst Day...

at least I am not, nor will I ever be, this woman.

Let's read some of the priceless prose of Ms. Robin Givhan, shall we?

I believe she was trying to begin her article in media res, but to me, she is simply maundering - in a fashion even Andy Rooney would find excessive.

The mind, so easily distracted by things mauve and lemon yellow, strays from more pressing concerns to ponder the sartorial: How many pantsuits does Hillary Clinton have in her closet? And does she ever wear them in the same combination more than once?
I would comment on this, but I just saw some bright shiny colors....lalalalalalala....

Whew, I'm back! Here's some more of Ms. Givhan's unique insight into Senator Clinton's sartorial strategy:

The pantsuit is Clinton's uniform. Hers is a mix-and-match world, a grown-up land of Garanimals: black pants with gray jacket, tan jacket with black pants, tan jacket with tan pants. There are a host of reasons to explain Clinton's attachment to pantsuits. They are comfortable. They can be flattering, although not when the jacket hem aligns with the widest part of the hips (hypothetically speaking, of course). Does she even have hips?
Now that is some fantastic stuff. First, the writer infantilizes the Senator by saying she wears Garanimals. And in drab colors, yet - she's so unwomanly, she can't even match tan and tan! (Never mind that Ms. Givhan was just fulminating about the Senator's overly bright colors three sentences before.) The piece de resistance is the last two sentences, though. Her pantsuits are cut unflatteringly over Hillary's hips, which apparently she doesn't have! Dizzyingly brilliant!

Could it get better/worse? Why yes. Yes it could.

And because Clinton seems to prefer crossing her legs at the ankle -- in the way girls were taught when girls were still sent to finishing school -- there is less likelihood of any embarrassing straight-to-YouTube video.
Let's not even talk about the fact that these three paragraphs don't seem to be linked, although they follow each other directly in the "article." Help me out with what she is trying to say. Is there something wrong with making sure that your crotch is not plastered all over YouTube? I mean, not that Hillary has one anyone would want to look at, since she's hardly even a woman, and besides which, she's fricking old as the hills, mmmmmkay? Ewwwwwww, how can Bill sleep with a Garanimal-wearing, pants-loving, colorblind, hipless, ancient crone like Hillary?

I really don't know how a person like this looks at herself in the mirror. Maybe she's got one that tells her she's the fairest in the land, like in "Snow White." But to me, she's a misogynistic, sad, jealous woman who would give anything to be in Hillary's sensible shoes.

Horse Races

In the past couple of days, I have heard two separate TeeVee pundits explain the narrowing of the Republican and Democratic primary races thusly:

"One reason is that, you know, Americans want a horse race."

Could these Washington bubbleheads be any more repugnant?

Listen, you fools, you privileged, smug, sociopathic pieces of shit. Politics is not a sport, despite all the lovely useful metaphors you sling around to make us think we are rooting for our "team." It is the deadly, World War III, nucularly-serious business of deciding who we want to lead our country. And we know now, oh, we know down in the crevices of our souls that IT FUCKING MATTERS WHO'S PRESIDENT. If Al Gore had been allowed to become President in 2001, is there a human being (and no, Bush supporters do not count as such any more) who actually thinks that America in 2007 would be the same as it is now?

No, Chris Cillizza, and A.B. Stoddard, and all you other empty-hearted "experts," we out here in The Real World do not want a horse race. We are not betting on the results at the fucking OTB. We are fighting for the soul of our country, for the return of sanity and the rule of law, for peace, truth, justice and the American Way. We are genuinely divided, as we should be, over who will bring us back to those ideals we hold so dear.

What a sad commentary on our media; people who don't even understand these basic truths about politics are the ones being hired to Explain It All...

Dude, Where's My Impeachment?

It's been two weeks since, in a dramatic and bizarre session of the House of Representatives, Dennis Kucinich's resolution to impeach Dick Cheney was passed and proceeded to the Judiciary Committee.

But I don't have to mention this. I mean, what with the huge media frenzy and all, you must be sick of hearing about it!

Oh, wait. Sorry. I was thinking of when a Democrat is impeached for lying about a blow job. My bad!

It is absolutely amazing to me, although unfortunately not surprising, that the traditional media is still this blatant about protecting the Bush Administration from the consequences of its actions.

Could there be a more impeachable vice president than Dick Cheney, after all? The guy's approval rating is 9%. He shot his friend in the face while drunk. He held secret energy meetings wherein he planned the invasion of Iraq for its oil, then planned to divide that oil among his buddies. He was in charge of the antiterrorism task force before 9/11 and didn't hold ONE MEETING. He leaked the name of a covert CIA operative to the media for political purposes, endangering both her and her colleagues. And let's not forget that the Vice President is a one-man Constitutional wrecking ball!

Yet the silence of my TeeVee is deafening. Not even Keith Olbermann, the most outspoken and eloquent broadcaster on the crimes of the Bush Administration, is permitted to speak of impeachment. I'm sure he is biting his tongue nightly, especially when having to do an entire segment on the vitally important vicissitudes of..."American Idol."

A majority of Americans support the impeachment of Cheney and, to a lesser degree, George Bush. But then, it's been a very long time since the traditional news media reflected the views of ordinary Americans; they're too busy trying to please their corporate masters. What they don't understand is, if no one watches, no one buys...

Absolutely. Fucking. Pathetic.

Oh. My. Guh. The media in this country is the biggest disgrace I've ever seen.

How in the bloody fuck is Rudy Giuliani still even in the race for President? Not only is he worse than George W. Bush temperamentally, intellectually and experientially, but he is clearly the most scandal-ridden front runner in modern (TeeVee) history. Can we just discuss how he married his second cousin? Or how he announced his divorce from Donna Hanover at a press conference? Or how he put the emergency center for New York IN THE WORLD TRADE CENTER and refused to fix the interdepartmental communications that were a problem in the previous bombing, thus being responsible for much of the death and destruction of 9/11? Or how many of his associates and BFF's are criminals?

You know what? That's not important. Let's obsess about how a couple of Hillary's aides suggested a couple of questions that related to the topics being discussed at the forum. Ooooh! Her campaign asked people if they would ask about global warming! THE HORROR!!!

But the media blackout on real Republican versus fake Democratic scandals doesn't stop there. One would think it would be difficult to mention the issue of planted questions without remembering the entire FAKE PRESS CONFERENCE WITH FAKE JOURNALISTS that FEMA staged! Or all the propaganda planted IN THE MAJOR MEDIA by the Bush Administration to support their No Child Left Behind initiative! Or the fact that Bush didn't even let anyone other than registered, fealty-swearing Fascists into his campaign speeches! Or that he planted a male hooker in the White House Press Corps to send him softball questions! We all know the blizzard of outrage and scandal all of this media manipulation by President Bush caused!

False Equivalency Makes My Head Asplode

What about the following is so difficult for the traditional media to understand?

1) Hiring prostitutes (a la Senator David Vitter) is against the law, and having a consensual affair with an adult is not (a la Bill Clinton).

2) Sexually harrassing underage boys (a la Congressman Mark Foley) is against the law, and having a consensual affair with an adult is not (a la Bill Clinton).

3) Trolling for sex in airport bathrooms (a la Senator Larry Craig) is against the law, and having a consensual affair with an adult is not (a la Bill Clinton).

Additionally, Bill Clinton was the subject of a multi-year partisan witch hunt, which eventually only uncovered said consensual affair. The Republics in the latest sex scandals were conducting their lawbreaking in the open, and were protected for many years by their party until unrelated investigations uncovered their wrongdoing.

Finally, Bill Clinton does not belong to a party which wins elections on the strength of their so-called "family values".

So, New York Times, Larry Craig and Bill Clinton are NOT THE LEAST FUCKING BIT ALIKE. Publishing Mitt Romney's latest spin without the least bit of context is incredibly intellectually dishonest, and is one MORE reason to disdain and eschew the Times as I do.

Please, Chris Matthews, I Beg You. Please Stop.

What in the world is Chris Matthews thinking, and why must he spew his noisome brain goo in my general direction?

While discussing the Democratic presidential candidates on the August 8 edition of MSNBC's Hardball, host Chris Matthews asserted: "I don't see a big, beefy alternative to [Sen.] Hillary Clinton [D-NY] -- a big guy. You know what I mean? An ... every-way big guy. I don't see one out there. I see a lot of slight, skinny, second- and third-rate candidates." Matthews prefaced his comment by saying, "I guess I'm thinking of an Eddie Rendell were in the race -- the governor of Pennsylvania -- or if [former Vice President] Al Gore were in the race or someone else who's a good heavyweight to be running."

Matthews' characterization of Gore as "a good heavyweight" marks a change from his previous characterizations of Gore. As Media Matters noted, on the December 21, 2006, edition of Hardball, Matthews asked Washington Times editorial page editor Tony Blankley if Gore was "in fighting weight" and then said: "He's the Hindenburg."

As Media Matters has documented, Matthews has previously touted the purportedly presidential attributes of each of the leading Republicans running for president:

  • On the May 2, 2006, edition of Hardball, Matthews said of former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, "He looks like [a] president to me."
  • On the November 19, 2006, edition of the NBC-syndicated The Chris Matthews Show, Matthews and his panel gushed over Sen. John McCain (AZ), calling him "passionate," "a smart hawk," and "kind of like Martin Luther." On the March 29 Hardball, Matthews stated: "John McCain certainly deserves to be president, based on his contribution to this country over the years."
  • On January 19, Matthews said of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney: "He has the perfect chin, the perfect hair, he looks right." On February 13, Matthews said Romney has "got a great chin, I've noticed."

Media Matters also noted that, during the July 18, 2006, edition of NBC's The Tonight Show, Matthews predicted a Giuliani victory in 2008, but also asserted: "I hope the American people take the next election very seriously and don't just vote partisan ... or personality or who has the happiest smile ... but picks the person that makes us feel the safest."

Oh, Tweety. Your mancrushes are horrifically embarrassing. You contradict yourself constantly. Your opinions are uninformed and shallower than the contestants on "The Bachelor".

I beg you. Come out of the closet and get a show on Logo TV discussing the hot manliness of all the Republican candidates. You can sniff Fred Thompson's underwear if you want. But stop, stop masquerading as someone who is fit to be listened to be intelligent people. Your vapidity and endless wanking just make us want to vomit.

And Now, Back to Our Regularly Scheduled Program.

Remember when you'd be watching the news on the teevee, and Dan Rather (or your anchor of choice) would say something like:

"Breaking news. A major bridge has collapsed in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The cause is unknown, but speculations are that recent construction could have contributed to the accident. There appear to have been more than 100 cars involved, and so far, we have heard of many injuries, but no deaths. Cell phones are inoperative at this point. More later."

And then he'd say those lovely words:

"And now, back to our regularly scheduled program."

There was a sense of proportion in those days; a sense that if you don't have any information, it is unseemly, nay, ridiculous to keep filling the time by the following exercises:
  • repeating the same information over and over;
  • showing the same pictures over and over; and
  • calling on "experts" who are not involved with the situation to uselessly speculate about what could be happening.
Nowadays? Well, I tuned in to my beloved Keith Olbermann's "Countdown" last night, and what did I see? One hour of uninformative "coverage" of the aforementioned event. There was nary a whisper of Rumsfeld's testi-lying at the Pat Tillman hearings, the crumbling of the Al-Maliki government in Iraq, the latest escalation in the Pentagon Lackey vs. Hillary feud (now Cheney has snarled that he agrees with the Lackey, who, surprise surprise! is a Cheney operative), or even, Jeebus forbid, Obama's major anti-terrorism speech.

In one of the Douglas Adams "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" books, it is postulated (with tongue in cheek, of course) that the answer to universal peace is these words:

"We apologize for the inconvenience."

I don't know about universal peace, but I think the words "And now, back to our regularly scheduled program" would go a long way towards healing our broken news culture.

Congress, Schmongress

Maybe it's just me, but wouldn't you think that when this new Democratic Congress passes a bill that Bush WON'T veto, it would be news on your teevee? Better yet - wouldn't you think that would go double for a bill about The Most Iconic Event Ever In the History of the World, September The Eleventh, Two Thousand and One(TM)?

But somehow, the teevee folks managed to ignore this story anyway.


WASHINGTON (AP) -- Congress sent President Bush legislation Friday to intensify anti-terror efforts in the U.S., shifting money to high-risk states and cities and expanding screening of air and sea cargo to stave off future September 11-style attacks.

The measure carries out major recommendations of the independent 9/11 Commission.

The bill, passed by the House on a 371-40 vote, ranks among the top accomplishments of the six-month-old Democratic Congress. The Senate approved the measure late Thursday by 85-8, and the White House said the president would sign the bill.

Now why wouldn't all the Security Screamers on the teevee be talking about how Congress was finally doing something right? You know, making Our Homeland Safer and all that good stuff?

Oh, that's right. Hillary Clinton showed a quarter-millimeter of cleavage.

Never mind.

How to Stop the Occupation of Iraq

I don't say much about the Iraq war on this blog, because to me, it's a symptom of our dysfunctional government, not a first cause.

Our founding fathers knew that we cannot function as a democracy without a well-informed citizenry. Unfortunately for America, our media has consolidated into a giant Military-Industrial Complex-promoting propaganda machine, bent on spreading disinformation to improve its bottom line. Thus, in 1999, the machine chose George W. Bush over Al Gore for president, despite Bush's obvious unsuitability to run anything larger than a lemonade stand.

The machine relentlessly pounded Al's "earth tones", his "sighing", his "lack of authenticity". It called him wooden and elitist. It made up lies about him (most famously, that he claimed to have invented the Internet), then used its giant echo chamber to cement those lies in unsuspecting American minds.
Of course, the real reason the machine didn't like Big Al was because he was well-known to be a fierce advocate for non-petroleum-based energy sources; and unlike George Bush, Al was not interested in the neo-con foreign policy paradigm. Sure, his vice president-wannabe, Joe Lieberman, was a neo-con; but until Dick Cheney took over, the vice-president's job was mainly a presidential placeholder. The machine knew Lieberman would have no chance at converting Al Gore to his paranoid, militaristic worldview.

There would be no wars for oil in an Al Gore presidency; a disaster for the machine, for another eight or sixteen years of peace and prosperity could put the MIC out of business. Then, what would the multi-chinned captains of industry do with themselves? Certainly they could not compete in the free market without all the subsidies and no-bid contracts the government had given them for so many years. My heavens, what would the Pentagon do to justify its enormous budget?

Thus, the machine stifled all honest debate about the two candidates. Thus, George W. Bush, the "Texecutioner", future murderer of hundreds of thousands, was portrayed as a compassionate, down-to-earth man, and Al Gore, the man who wants to save the planet and promote a peaceful foreign policy, was portrayed as a sneering elitist. Thus, when the governor of Florida, Bush's brother, fixed the 2000 election, the machine showed no outrage and deemed all who recognized it to be conspiracy theorists. Thus, when the Supreme Court decided that the vote counting needed to stop in Florida, and that Bush was to be appointed President, the machine acted as though Bush had legitimacy as President. 9/11 gave it all the excuses it needed to worship Bush as a savior-daddy. And thus, when the case for war in Iraq was phonier than Bush's cowboy persona, the machine screamed and hollered about how Saddam was worse than Hitler and had nuclear warheads pointed at all of our heads. Besides, didn't Sadama bin Hussein attack us on 9/11? Hmmmmmmmmm?

For the past six years, thanks to our dysfunctional media, we have been stuck with the Bush-Cheney presidency, the most diabolical criminal organization to ever take charge of the levers of government. And Bush-Cheney have arrogated the powers of a dictator unto themselves, with the complicity of the machine and a supremely corrupt Republican majority in Congress.

But now the Democrats have finally gotten control of Congress (by a very slim, non-veto-proof majority, of course). How then, can we stop this cabal before they completely destroy our country?

I may be totally cynical, but I don't think Bush and Cheney can be stopped by either legislation or cutting off their funds. Bush's signing statements prove that he cares nothing for the law, and when they needed funds for the original invasion of Iraq, they simply stole it from the budget for the war in Afghanistan. The only answer is impeachment and removal from office.

I have recently heard from two different Washington insiders (Richard Wolffe and Brent Budowsky, on different sides of the political spectrum) that the Democrats plan to impeach Bush and Cheney in September, after General Petraeus gives his report to Congress.

Giant Green Lizard, make it so; the sooner the better.
